Describe your household, income, rent, utilities, and student status. Upload proof of identity, income, and eligible expenses when requested.
Answer the county interview call—often within 1–2 weeks and sometimes from an unfamiliar number. You can reschedule through your county office.
The county normally decides within 30 days. Ask about expedited service if your household has very little income or cash for food.
Your benefits are delivered on a California EBT card. Save notices and note your review or recertification date.
Students enrolled at least half-time generally need a student exemption in addition to meeting the usual income and household rules. Common exemptions include working at least 20 hours a week, participating in federal or state work-study, having a qualifying disability, caring for a young child, or being under 18 or age 50 or older. The state agency—not this site—makes the decision.
Qualifying households can receive a monthly discount on phone or internet service. SNAP or Medicaid participation may help establish eligibility.
