Describe your household, income, rent, utilities, and student status. Upload proof of identity, income, and eligible expenses when requested.

Answer the county interview call—often within 1–2 weeks and sometimes from an unfamiliar number. You can reschedule through your county office.

The county normally decides within 30 days. Ask about expedited service if your household has very little income or cash for food.

Your benefits are delivered on a California EBT card. Save notices and note your review or recertification date.

IMPORTANT FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
Being low-income alone may not satisfy the SNAP student rule.
Students enrolled at least half-time generally need a student exemption in addition to meeting the usual income and household rules. Common exemptions include working at least 20 hours a week, participating in federal or state work-study, having a qualifying disability, caring for a young child, or being under 18 or age 50 or older. The state agency—not this site—makes the decision.

Medi-Cal (California Medicaid).
Medicaid applications are open year-round. A quick screening can help you start, but only the state can make a final eligibility decision.
Compare your school plan and any coverage available through a parent or spouse. Check the provider network around your California campus before keeping an out-of-state plan.
Use Covered California’s Shop and Compare tool for a preliminary estimate of Medi-Cal or marketplace savings based on household, location, age, and projected annual income.
Apply for Medi-Cal through BenefitsCal or Covered California. The appropriate county or state program will make the final eligibility determination and may request verification.
If you do not qualify for Medi-Cal, compare Covered California plans and financial help. Moving for school, losing other coverage, or turning 26 may support enrollment outside the annual open-enrollment period.
THE STUDENT-SPECIFIC PART
Enrollment is not the eligibility test.
Student status is not a separate Medi-Cal disqualification. Tax dependency and expected household income matter, so answer application questions using the tax filing arrangement expected for the coverage year.
Before choosing coverage
Compare premiums, deductibles, prescriptions, mental-health coverage, and the provider network near campus. Students under 26 may be able to stay on a parent’s plan, but an out-of-state network may offer limited routine care. Moving for school, losing coverage, or turning 26 may create a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period.
